Numbers and Gender

Some Spanish numbers that are used with nouns have to agree in gender to the nouns that they are counting. These include the following numbers:

1 / 100 / 200 / 300 / 400 / 500 / 600 / 700 / 800 / 900

uno / un / una (one) cien / ciento (one hundred)


uno - use this form when counting (uno, dos, tres, cuatro etc), but not when counting nouns
un - use this form before masculine nouns

Él quiere un vaso de vino.	He wants a glass of wine.
Nos quedaremos por un día.	We will stay for one day.

una - use this form before feminine nouns

Él quiere una taza de café.	He wants a cup of coffee.
Nos quedaremos por una noche.	We will stay for one night.

cien - use this form before masculine and feminine nouns

Cien ladrillos en la pared.	One hundred bricks in the wall.
Cien hojas de papel.	One hundred sheets of paper.

ciento - use this form before other numbers

Ciento cinco tipos de pintura.	One hundres and five types of paint.
Hay ciento mil personas aquí.	There are one hundred thousand people here.

Percentages

Using un (one), before all percentages except one percent is optional as is the use of cien or ciento (one hundred) when using one hundered percent.

1st, 2nd, 3rd etc (ordinal numbers)

Primero/a (1st) and tercero/a (3rd) take a shortened form when they are used before singular masculine nouns. (1er and 3er)

Fue el primer día del mes.	It was the first day of the month.
(Yo) comeré pescado primero.	I'll eat fish first.
Él lo hizo por primera vez.	He did it for the first time.
Marzo es el tercer mes del año.	March is the third month of the year.
